The Enviro leaders at Henderson Intermediate School are
interested in environmental issues. The first term has
focussed on addressing the rubbish issues around our school.
Last year’s Enviro council initiated ‘Nature Ninja cards’. These
are awarded to students at morning tea and lunchtime, who
are seen to be picking up rubbish and helping keep our
environment clean. Winners are drawn at assembly to win
In Term 1 the enviro council has started a class responsibility programme, where each class has students who check their assigned area is clear of rubbish. Students spend a few minutes after lunch making sure their area is rubbish free. Another enviro leader checks their area and that class gets their name in a draw if the area is clean. Term prizes include a ‘free’ fun afternoon for the winning class, but the ultimate prize is a fish and chip lunch, bought by our principal. The enviro council has noted a big improvement in our school environment.
Some members of the Enviro council are part of the Gardening club, which has started up in Term 1. Their goal is to reinstate the overgrown garden behind the food technology room, to grow fresh vegetables.
Many of the Enviro council are involved in ‘Trees for Survival’, run by Mrs Dawson, our Science teacher. This is an initiative to grow native seedlings and plant them out later in the year.
